Hair Extensions

Hair is an important aspect of a person's appearance. A hair cut or hair style defines a person's personality, whether it being funky or conservative. Hair extensions are a great way changing someone's look for a short period of time; it has also become very popular among many celebrities.

Hair extensions came a long way, there are presently many different methods of applying the hair strands, but the two popular ways are the 'individual strands' method and the 'wefts' method. Remember to ask yourself what type of your hair extensions you would like in the first place, there are many types, such as Asian hair, European hair, European Quality hair, wefts, and virgin hair.

The individual strands method consists of taking approximately 20-50 strands of hair extensions and attaching it to your hair. Hair extensions are attached just below the ears, the strands can be glued on to your scalp, the strands can be weaved in hair, or the strands can be compressed with hot metal rods. Other methods include the use of polymers and waxes and heat fusing the extensions.

Wefts are different from individual strands of hair, the hairs of a weft are attached at the top, leaving the bottom loose, it basically looks like a curtain of hair. How are they applied? Your actual hair and the weft are both sewn into tiny braid in the middle of your head, also known as a cornrow running horizontally at the back of your hair. The weft virtually seems invisible due to the hair that flows from the crown of your head. Depending on the style or how long your want your extensions to be, the sizes and number of wefts vary. For example, if you want thicker hair, 2-3 wefts are put in. If you want longer hair, usually 5-6 wefts are put in.

The most frequent question asked is how long do hair extensions last? Generally speaking, with proper treatment, hair extensions can last up to three months. From my past experience, hair extensions should not be kept in the hair for longer than three months because it can damage your natural hair. After three months, it is best to take the extensions out or if you like the look, get the whole process done again.

I highly recommend you get your hair extensions done by a professional hair stylist of an extensions artist. If you are hesitant whether they are professionals, ask for a portfolio of previous hair extensions they have performed in the past. Having hair extensions is an excellent way of having that look "celebrity" look many dream about and it gives you the freedom of having short and long hair!
